APD | Former Maldives President Nasheed returns home ending self-imposed exile

By APD writer Easwaran

MALE, Nov. 1 (APD) -- Former Maldives President Mohamed Nasheed returned home on Thursday after two years in self-imposed exile.

Nasheed, chief of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP), flew from Colombo with his wife Laila Ali and President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

The former Maldivian President was greeted at the Colombo airport by Minister Faizer Mustapha before he flew to the Maldives.

President-elect Ibrahim Mohamed Solih posted pictures with Nasheed on the flight as they left for the Maldivian capital.

Nasheed's legal team and supporters greeted him at the Maldivian capital on his return.

The former President was jailed in 2015 for 13 years after being found guilty of ordering the arrest of a judge while in office.

He however fled the Maldives on the pretext of seeking medical attention in the UK while serving his jail term.

Nasheed decided to return to the Maldives after current President Abdulla Yameen lost the recent Presidential elections to Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

Ibrahim Mohamed Solih is scheduled to be sworn in on November 11th.
