APD | European Union supports the Mindanao peace process amidst the Jolo bombings

By APD writer Melo M. Acuna

MANILA, Jan.27 (APD) -- The European Union described the twin bombings in Jolo Cathedral a “human tragedy.” The twin bombings killed at least 18 people and wounded 83 others Sunday morning.

In a statement made by Maja Kocijancic, EU Spokesperson for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and European Neighborhood Policy and Enlargement Negotiations, released past 10:00 P.M. Sunday, the European Union said they are extending their sincere condolences to the many victims of today’s bombing during mass at the Our Lady of Mt. Carmel cathedral in Sulu Province, southern Philippines.

“This is also an attack against the basic right to practice one’s religion,” the statement said.

The statement added they remain supportive of the Mindanao Peace Process and last week’s plebiscite on greater Bangsamoro regional autonomy.

“The EU plans to continue such support in the future,” the statement concluded.
