APD | India: National security advisor briefs home minister on Kashmir

By APD writer Rishika Chauhan

New Delhi, Aug. 21 (APD) -Ajit Doval, India’s National Security Advisor briefed Home Minister Amit Shah on the current security situation in Jammu and Kashmir early this week.

Restrictions on the phone, internet, and other services have been imposed in Jammu and Kashmir since August 5, when the announcement that the former province will lose its special status was made.

Since then many Kashmir leaders have been put under house arrest for security reasons, while restrictions on public movement have also been imposed on the residents.

Doval briefed Shah after returning from Kashmir, where he was staying in the past two weeks to monitor the security situation.

While some restrictions have been removed in Kashmir, others continue. Primary schools reopened early this week to the low student and staff attendance. The middle schools are expected to be opened soon as well.

The government is currently assessing the security situation to ascertain the appropriate time to remove the security restrictions in Kashmir.

Since Article 370 has been revoked, officially Jammu and Kashmir will become two union territories on October 31.

In the meantime, the central authorities will also decide on the division of resources between the two union territories as well as the administrative mechanisms in the two.
