APD | Greece applies stricter migration, refugee policies

By APD writer Aditya Nugraha

ATHENS, Oct. 1 (APD) - Greece government has decided to toughen its migration and refugee policy after the death of a woman in the recent blaze at nation’s Lesbos Island’s Moria camp.

Number of people illegally entering the country has soared, mainly migrants and not refugees, government said.

With its new policies, Greek government has tightened the requirements for those applying for asylum as well as intensifying its security in border areas.

Greece will also construct new closed pre-deportation centers for illegal migrants and aims to return 10,000 migrants to their home countries by 2020.

Greek government has recently called on the European Union (EU) to help Turkey better stem the rising flow of migrants as arrivals of migrants and refugees to Greece from Turkey has reached two-year high.

The government would also announce a joint initiative with Bulgaria and Cyprus and Greece at the EU Justice and Home Affairs Council on October 7 to 8. The joint initiative of the three countries would facilitate them in tackling migration route in the eastern Mediterranean.

Greece was not invited to attend the recent EU meeting on Migration in Malta as the event discussed migrants who arrived via sea from North African countries.
