APD | Tokyo tops the list of world’s 10 best large cities

By APD writer Alice

US luxury and lifestyle travel magazine Conde Nast Traveler has named Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, first in the list of the world’s 10 best large cities, which also includes two other Japanese cities: Kyoto and Osaka.

This is the first time the three Japanese cities named in the top 10. Tokyo topped the list for a fourth consecutive year, Kyoto ranked second for the second year in a row, while Osaka moved up to fifth from 12th, according to the magazine.

Tokyo was described as a fever dream you don't want to wake up from with its combination of the modern and traditional, and having the most Michelin-starred restaurants in the world. It has 230 such establishments, of which 13 have three stars.

Tokyo, one of the world's leading tourist destinations, is looking forward to welcoming even more visitors as it will host the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The list saw Singapore in third position and Vienna fourth. Copenhagen came sixth, followed by Amsterdam, Barcelona, Taipei and Sydney.

The results were based on votes of more than 600,000 readers. The list excludes cities in the United States, for which there is a separate list.
