APD | Samsung accounts nearly 54 percent of global 5G smartphone market

South Korea’s Samsung Electronics Co. said it accounted for 53.9 percent of the global 5G smartphone market as of November 2019.

The company exported more than 6.7 million Galaxy 5G smartphones last year, solidifying its top position in the global 5G handset market.

In 2019, the South Korean tech giant launched five Galaxy 5G devices, including the Galaxy S10 5G and Note 10 5G, as well as Galaxy Fold 5G. It said that it will unveil more 5G mobile devices this year.

According to Roh Tae-moon, head of research and development unit at Samsung's IT Mobile Communications division, said for Samsung, 2020 will be the year of Galaxy 5G, and the company is excited to bring 5G to even more device categories and introduce people to mobile experiences they never thought possible.

The company plans to introduce the Galaxy Tab S6 5G, a 5G-based tablet, in South Korea in the first quarter of 2020.

According to the industry tracker FnGuide, Samsung Electronics' yearly operating profit for 2019 is estimated to be around 27 trillion won, down about 53 percent from last year's 59 trillion won.

In 2018, a golden year for Samsung, the company's annual sales and operating profit stood at 245 trillion won and 44.3 trillion won, respectively, touching all-time highs, backed by strong sales of flagship smartphones and chips.

For 2020, Samsung Electronics' annual sales are expected to gain 8.4 percent on-year to 251.5 trillion won, and the company's yearly operating profit to soar 46 percent to 39.5 trillion won.
