APD | India: Incidence of cancer increasing says survey

By APD writer Rishika Chauhan

On the occasion of the 20th anniversary of the World Cancer Day, the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), conducted a survey, which revealed disturbing results.

According to the recently released results the incidence of cancer cases is increasing throughout the world, especially in countries like India.

A report published in the Indian Express states, “Across countries, use of tobacco, exposure to harmful UV rays and passive smoking appear to be the most recognised factors that can increase a person’s risk of cancer.”

The survey was a multi-country survey with participants from Australia, Brazil, Bolivia, Canada, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, India, Israel, Japan, Mexico, Kenya, the Philippines, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, Turkey, and the USA.

The survey further states that, 9.6 million people died from cancer in 2018 throughout the world, and half of these deaths happened in the least developed countries of the world.

About the survey, Dr Anil D’Cruz, the president-elect of UICC, Geneva was quoted in the report explaining, “Results indicate that globally, almost three in five people surveyed say they are concerned about developing cancer in the future.”

“The results indicate gaps in cancer risk awareness and health promoting behaviour between higher and lower socio-economic groups,” he further said.
