Japan's capital reports 201 new cases of COVID-19, total number tops 2,700

Tokyo confirmed 201 new cases of COVID-19 as of Friday afternoon, local media reported, pushing the total number of COVID-19 cases to 2,796 in the Japanese capital.

It is the first time the daily increase of Tokyo has exceeded 200, a day after Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe declared a state of emergency for the entire country extending the order far beyond the original seven prefectures as Japan grapples to curb the spread of COVID-19.

The Japanese government has begun delivering cloth masks to every household in the country in a bid to deal with the shortage. In Tokyo's Setagaya Ward, post office workers started delivering packages containing two washable masks to homes on Friday morning.

Meanwhile, the Tokyo metropolitan government has set up a phone consultation center to provide information on COVID-19 in 14 languages, aiming at giving the needed support to respond to the growing anxiety among foreigners living under the state of emergency.

Across the country, the number of infections has climbed to 9,327 as of Friday afternoon. Besides Tokyo, Osaka Prefecture recorded 1,020 COVID-19 cases, Kanagawa Prefecture 675, Chiba Prefecture 595, Saitama Prefecture 564 and 466 cases have been recorded in Hyogo Prefecture.
