Historic 'One World' concert to support health workers

On Saturday, One World: Together At Home, a special virtual concert, will be held in support of healthcare workers on the frontlines of the COVID-19 crisis. The event will feature over 100 artists and celebrities from all around the world.

Chinese pianist Lang Lang, singers Eason Chan and Jacky Cheung will participate in the musical feast, according to the latest lineup artist list released on Tuesday.

Global Citizen and the World Health Organization (WHO) announced the event on Apr. 6, curated in collaboration with American pop star Lady Gaga. It will be co-hosted by Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert.

One World will feature appearances and musical performances from an international lineup of stars, including Paul McCartney, Stevie Wonder, Céline Dion, Taylor Swift, Alicia Keys, Elton John, Lady Gaga, Andrea Bocelli, Billie Eilish, Jennifer Lopez, Usher, Pharrell Williams, Chris Martin, Awkwafina, Victoria and David Beckham, Ellen DeGeneres, Keith Urban, LL COOL J and more.

The concert will premiere on Saturday Apr. 18, in celebration and support of health care workers and the COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund for the World Health Organization (WHO), the organizers said.

The World Health Organization is committed to defeating the coronavirus pandemic with science and public health measures, and supporting the health workers who are on the frontlines of the response, said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the WHO. We may have to be apart physically for a while, but we can still come together virtually to enjoy great music. 'The One World: Together At Home' concert represents a powerful show of solidarity against a common threat.

The event will be broadcast on Saturday at 5p.m. PST (8 p.m. EST) on major TV networks and platforms in North America and around the world, and in the UK on Sunday, Apr. 19 from 7 p.m. BST. The event will also be digitally broadcast online through various global platforms.

In China, Alibaba Group's Youku video site, MTV's Chinese channel and Tencent's platforms, including Tencent Music Entertainment Group and KuGou Music, will broadcast the event live.

The organizers are still calling on individuals and philanthropists to join and support COVID-19 response initiatives. Changemakers, investors, and foundation leaders are being urged to support global health efforts by investing in building stronger health systems and funding vaccine development. The campaign has already raised $35 million to support COVID-19 relief efforts through a mixture of philanthropic and corporate donations.

The all-star lineup has drawn comparisons to Live Aid, which was held in 1985 to raise funds for those suffering in the Ethiopian famine. At the time, it was the most ambitious international satellite television live benefit music event ever. However, One World is not meant as a fundraising telethon, and will instead be focused on entertainment and showing support for healthcare workers.

We are also incredibly grateful for the continued support from the artist community to make 'One World: Together At Home' a moment of global unity, said Hugh Evans, co-founder and CEO of Global Citizen. Our hope for the special is that everyone will come away believing that we, as a shared humanity, can emerge from this moment forever grateful for the work of doctors, nurses, teachers, grocery store workers, and all those who are the backbone of our communities.

This pandemic is too large for governments to tackle alone, he added.
